Important Things to Remember about Iron On Patches

In terms of usage, iron on patches are probably the most convenient.  It is also one of the most popular backing options around.  However, not all types of fabric are suitable for an iron on patch.  You can use the iron on patch to denim and cotton.  You need to avoid applying it on leather, vinyl, nylon, polyester, or spandex.

PatchMost patch providers or manufacturers recommend iron on backing due to its stability and ease of use.  You don’t need to get your needle and thread to sew the patch on the clothing article where you intend to use it.  You simply iron it on and you’re good to go.

The iron on patches have heat reactive adhesive glue.  When the heat from the iron is applied to the patch, the adhesive is activated.  The reaction makes it possible for the patch to fasten or cling onto the piece of clothing where you iron it on.

How to Iron the Patches On

You will need your reliable clothes or flat iron, clean towel or washcloth, ironing board, and your iron on patch.  Make sure to use a sturdy and flat ironing board to apply the patch evenly.  It is also advisable not to iron when there are children around, it is possible that their curiosity will get the best of them and touch the hot iron without your knowledge.

Get the clothing or shirt where you need to attach your iron on patch.  Make sure that the cloth is clean.  It should be freshly washed and dried properly.  It is also important to make the clothing wrinkle-free.  The fabric where you will attach your patch must be smooth.  The patch might not cling onto the cloth properly if it has wrinkles, or might crumple and gather to one side when you begin ironing your patch on.

Follow the setting of the iron for the kind of fabric you have for your clothing.  Remember the only allowed fabric that you can use for your iron on patch.  If you are using a cotton material, then your iron must be set to “cotton” or the right heat for a certain piece of fabric.  You don’t want to burn or damage your shirt so you must follow the instructions on the iron.

Iron the area where you want to put one of the Iron on patches that you have.  Apply heat onto it for about ten seconds, and make sure that the patch attached properly.

Get your towel and cover your patch with it.  Move your flat iron over the towel, to and fro, and in circular motion for 90 seconds max.

Lift the towel to see if you are applying the patch in a correct manner.  If you patch does not cling on the cloth, then you need to start over again with a fresh patch. This time make sure to follow the instructions to the dot.  If you successfully attached the patch, then you can proceed to the next step.

Reverse your clothing (turn it inside out) and iron the patch on that side of the clothing.  Iron the patch in a circular motion for about 30 seconds.

Allow your clothing and patch to cool before conducting some movement test.  Wear your shirt or piece of clothing with the iron on patch and see if the patch can move along your natural body movement without falling off.

When washing your shirt with iron patch, make sure not to wring it hard to make the patch last for a long time.  It is best if you just hand wash your shirt and avoid washing the patch area too hard.

Iron on patches also come in different styles and designs.  When you submit your own design, make sure that it is the most suitable one.
